I Never Suspected My Workplace Was So Dangerous

29 Aug

I first started developing pain in my lower back about four months ago. I went to a chiropractor, but the pain never ceased much. I figured it was just a sign of aging. When I started feeling like I could not get adequate breaths of air, I went to my primary care physician, who ran some tests. I was expecting to be told that I needed to lose weight, but it was much worse than that. I was told I had little chance of being alive in two years. Other things were mentioned like mesothelioma compensation, specialists and counseling, and I did get some information on each of those things.

The most important thing was to go to the specialist that my primary care physician wanted me to see. Further tests were completed, and I realized that I really did have a short time left on this earth. My wife and I also talked with a counselor because this was a huge adjustment in our lives. While the pain still has not progressed to a point where I cannot take it, we both had been made aware that this was coming.

The final thing that I did was look into compensation for this cancer. I did not realize that my workplace for most of my career was such a dangerous place. The more I looked into this though, the more I realized I was not the only one affected by this. Three others who worked there through the years have also been diagnosed with mesothelioma, and we have created a support group for us, our families, and other workers where we had worked. It was here that I learned how to file a settlement, and the process has been started. I want my family to be taken care of when I am not here. While I am here though, I am enjoying each day to the best of my ability!
